When Lily didn’t object Otto took his phone from his pocket. He hoped he was right. He hoped that if he could explain his thoughts and feelings to Lily it would help her to understand that the issue hadn’t been that he didn’t care but that he hadn’t known how to help her. He was hoping he could help her now.

He’d come past the house without warning, needing to check on her, but unsure of his reception. When she’d opened the door he could see she’d been crying but getting her to open up was proving more and more difficult. Despite the counselling sessions she still kept her cards close to her chest. He thought perhaps if he went first, if he exposed his vulnerabilities, she might be able to do the same.

He poured her a second, smaller glass of wine and began talking.

‘The other day, in Helen’s office, you said that our problems started when you got pregnant. That surprised me. I didn’t think that was the turning point. In my mind it was when we lost the baby. The first thing I had to do when Helen gave us that homework was to work out where to start so I listened to you and went back to the day you told me you were pregnant.’

They hadn’t been in London very long, just a few weeks, and they were still finding their feet when Lily had delivered her news. Otto could still remember how shocked he’d been and he knew he hadn’t reacted as Lily had hoped.

‘We were still both settling into our new routines, new jobs, a new flat. We were working long hours and getting used to the lack of sunshine at the beginning of an English winter. I’m not making excuses, just acknowledging that we had a lot going on. We were already dealing with a lot of changes and I admit, when you showed me the pregnancy test you’d done, my first thought was, This is too soon and I know I didn’t hide that thought very well. At all well. It was clearly written on my face.

‘You accused me of not wanting the baby and that wasn’t true. I wasn’t happy about the timing—’ they’d agreed to wait until he’d finished his training, until they had established their careers ‘—and I was worried about how we’d manage. I was going to be working long hours and studying on top of that. We were away from home, away from your siblings, away from any of our support networks. It was going to be tough.

‘I knew you were excited and I knew you wanted me to be excited too and I knew you were upset with me because it was obvious that I wasn’t. I was scared.’

‘Scared?’

He nodded. ‘I didn’t know how we were going to manage. I had all sorts of thoughts—some were premature, I admit. My head went straight to the nine months ahead. How would we cope? We had no help. We’d be down an income.
